Tessia DeMattos

“I really love physical therapy because I love helping people, but really, it’s the relationships I create with my patients that matter more. I went through years of schooling because the pursuit of knowledge and the drive to provide the best help for patients pushes me to be a better version of myself.”

Activism, Community, and Education

Tessia first began her journey as a powerlifter many years ago during her undergraduate career before knowing she would want to pursue Physical Therapy as a profession. She fell in love with the sport and wanted to find a way to blend being in the powerlifting world and in the medical world together and what better way than with a career in Physical Therapy? After all, the only difference between training and rehab is the starting point.

Tessia obtained her undergraduate degree at New York University and then later completed her Doctor of Physical Therapy at Columbia University. During her time at NYU, she wanted to share the love of her sport with others, notably females and created a Girls Who Lift Club targeted towards encouraging women to feel empowered in the weight room. At Columbia University, Tessia was an active member of the Free Weight Club, and tried to bridge the gap between training in rehab by helping to teach a “Strength and Conditioning” lecture and lab to her classmates. A gap, she hopes to continue to bridge with strength athletes. Her goal is to help strength athletes get back on the platform to help them reach their goals through a personalized, thoughtful, and collaborative approach.

In her spare time, she enjoys snowboarding, picking things up and putting them down, trying new delicious foods, and dancing her heart out.
